Fisherman's bomb scare

PART of a Highland village had to be evacuated yesterday after a fisherman sparked a bomb scare by taking home part of an unexploded mine.

It is believed he removed part of the mine and took it home to Shandwick in Easter Ross.

Police contacted navy bomb disposal experts and a 50 metre cordon was put around the fisherman's home. Neighbouring houses were also evacuated and buses due to travel through the area to take schoolchildren home were diverted.

The mine is believed to be about 2ft in diameter and dates from the Second World War.

The Cromarty Firth was a major Royal Navy base during both world wars.
