Stag attack victim to thank Highland locals

Kate Stone, 45, from Cambridge, was seriously injured near Fort William just over a year ago, on December 30 2013.

She was on a short break with friends when the stag ran towards her and gored her while she was standing outside a private residence in Lochailort.

She told the Sunday Post she planned to go back to the area in the near future.

Dr Stone said: “I’ve been hoping to go back for the last six months, but have been so busy I haven’t made it yet. However it’s something I really do want to and hope to soon.”

She added: “It’s not that I’m laying my ghosts to rest because I’ve already come to terms with the accident. I just want to pay my respects for the incredible kindness the community showed me.

“What happened shocked them all so I just want to show I’m here, I’m well and to say thank you.”

She was taken to Belford Hospital in Fort William before being transferred by air to the Southern General in Glasgow.

Doctors there put her into an induced coma on New Year’s Eve 2013 following an operation to repair damage to her windpipe.

Dr Stone said: “I really got the best service any NHS patient could ask for. To make me well was a mission but they definitely stepped up to the mark.”

She added: “I still remember lying there on that night resigned to the fact I was going to die. It’s amazing how far I’ve come in such a short space of time.”
