Property owners in these areas of Scotland are the least likely to suffer a housebreaking (burglary), according to a new study.
New research conducted by Confused.com has ranked the UK areas with the lowest number of burglaries (or housebreakings) according to their population.
Scotland (on a technicality) experiences zero ‘burglaries’ annually. According to Crime.Scot there is no crime of burglary in Scotland, rather the term we use is ‘housebreaking’.
Housebreaking refers to theft via breaking into someone’s home or breaking in with the intention to steal.
Technicality aside (as this study factors in both ‘burglary’ and ‘housebreaking’) East Dunbartonshire was deemed the safest UK region to live in, with only 0.44 housebreakings having occurred per 1,000 people last year.

5. Argyll & Bute
This council area, located in western Scotland, extends from the southwestern Grampian Mountains into the Atlantic Ocean and North Channel, it includes famous towns like Oban. In 2021, 0.58 housebreakings took place per 1,000 people. Curiously, the council area has seen a 1.96% increase in housebreaking rates annually since 2017.

6. South Devon and Dartmoor
According to this research, the safest homes in England are located in the South-West. South Devon and Dartmoor citizens experience 0.6 burglaries per 1,000 people and this is a 12.97% drop in the burglary rates seen each year since 2017.

7. Falkirk / East and Mid Devon
Falkirk council area is located in east-central Scotland while Mid Devon is a local government district located in Devon, England. Both UK regions rank equally for having 0.63 burglary incidents occur per 1,000 people in their respective areas. However, while Falkirk saw a 9.34% drop in the annual housebreaking rate since 2017, East and Mid Devon saw an even greater percentage decrease at 13.31%.

8. Moray
This council area exists in the north-east of Scotland, bordering other regions like Aberdeenshire and Highland, it includes well-known towns like Elgin. Citizens in the Moray council area experienced 0.64 housebreakings per 1,000 people in 2021, and have seen a -0.6% decrease in the annual housebreaking rate since 2017.
