Supermarket hit by armed robbers

two armed and masked men tried to rob supermarket staff with a gun and a knife.

Three female shop workers, aged 41, 42, and 47, were threatened by the pair inside a Tesco Extra store on Main Street in Kilwinning, Ayrshire.

The men demanded money, but made off empty-handed towards the Woodwynd area of the town, police said.

Strathclyde Police said no firearm was discharged, but the older staff member was hit on the head during the incident, at about 6am yesterday.She did not require medical treatment.

Both men wore balaclavas and were about 5ft 7in tall. One wore a black hooded top and the other a grey hooded top. Police said CCTV footage was being reviewed and extra patrols would be laid on.

Detective Inspector Steven Wallace said: “We know a bus was passing as the suspects made their escape. I’d appeal to anyone on that bus who saw the men to get in touch.”
