Strathclyde Police create rape and sex crime unit

A NEW police unit has been created to improve the investigation of rape and other sexual crimes.

Strathclyde Police said the unit was formed to provide a better service to victims and increase their confidence in reporting incidents.

It follows changes to the law on sexual offences to include sex when a victim is asleep or unconscious and sex without consent through inebriation.

Based at the force headquarters, dedicated officers will review the investigation process with input from groups including Scottish Women’s Aid and Rape Crisis.

Chief Superintendent George Nedley, who is spearheading the unit, said: “Rape and sexual crimes are horrific and harrowing for the victim and their families. We have recognised a need to review the investigations into this type of crime.”
