Fotheringham, who joins from Scots rival BTO, brings more than 30 years’ experience of advising individuals on all aspects of family law. Before joining BTO in 2013, he was director of family law at Lindsays and a consultant at Fyfe Ireland, having previously spent 23 years at venerable Dunfermline practice Ross & Connel.

He said: “Shoosmiths is building an enviable reputation north of the Border, one which I regard as a stand-out firm. I look forward to making my mark on Shoosmiths and growing the offering with the team, in Scotland and nationally.”

A specialist in child support law, Fotheringham is vice-convenor of the Law Society of Scotland’s family law committee and also lectures and tutors at the University of Edinburgh.

Marika Franceschi, Edinburgh family partner at Shoosmiths – which merged with Edinburgh’s Archibald Campbell & Harley in 2012 – said: “The skills John has honed over his lengthy career complement our family offering. We are very pleased to be building our family team nationally and we welcome John at an exciting time for Shoosmiths as we grow our presence in Scotland.”
