Police probe offensive messages on online tribute

POLICE are investigating “offensive messages” posted on Facebook after a 14-year-old boy was found dead in an apparent suicide at a home in the Scottish Borders.

The post is believed to have been left on a page on the social networking site titled “RIP Matt Lochrie”, set up in tribute to the former Galashiels Academy pupil, who was discovered on Sunday morning.

Tributes have been paid to the talented young sportsman and last night 1,185 people had “liked” the page set up on Facebook in his memory .

Several people criticised the post, left by a Kate or Katie, and asked for it to be withdrawn.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: “Police attended at an address in the Catrail Road area of Galashiels at about 8:20am on Sunday, 15 January, after the body of a 14-year-old boy was discovered.

“There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances.

“Officers are also investigating following a report that offensive messages relating to this incident were posted on Facebook.”

The boy’s former headteacher Kenny McKay led tributes, saying: “The whole school is shocked and saddened by the death of Matt Lochrie, one of our third year pupils.

“Matt was an enthusiastic boy who very much enjoyed his sports, representing the school at both football and rugby.

“He also enjoyed cricket, playing locally, and was a very skilful sportsman. Matt was a popular boy and will be greatly missed.”

A Scottish Borders Council spokesman said it was working with the school and other pupils would be offered counselling.

He added: added: “The alleged offensive comments are subject to a police investigation and we will assist Lothian and Borders Police with their enquiries if requested to do so.

“As with any tragic incident our education department is working closely with the school to offer a range of options to assist pupils during this difficult time, including counselling.”
