Men face jail after brutal kebab house attack in Dundee

Lee Murphy and Omar Rafiq each attacked Paul Gordon within seconds of each other at the Corfu kebab shop in Dundee’s North Lindsay Street.

A confrontation ensued inside the shop initially, with Rafiq exchanging words with the victim before stepping forward and punching him in the face.

Mr Gordon then staggered out of the shop - but was then attacked again, this time by Murphy.

Fiscal depute Saima Rasheed said the pair’s attack was caught in full on CCTV.

She said: “The complainer managed to make his way home and go to bed - the alcohol appears to have numbed the pain.

“He woke up in the morning in extreme pain and having flashbacks to the incident.

“He attended hospital and it was discovered he had suffered a fractured cheekbone and lower jaw.

“The doctors were of the opinion this was caused by blunt force trauma.

“When he was detained the accused Murphy asked police ‘does the boy have a broken jaw then?’.”

Murphy, 33, an inmate at HMP Perth, and Rafiq, 28, of Ladywell Avenue, Dundee, pleaded guilty on indictment to a charge of assault to severe injury.

Defence lawyers George Donnelly and John Boyle said they would reserve their pleas in mitigation to a later sentencing date.

Sheriff Simon Collins QC deferred sentence until next month for social work background reports.

He said: “They should be under no illusion, this is a serious offence and custody will be very much in my mind.”

Murphy was remanded in custody and Rafiq was released on bail until their sentencing date.
