AN elderly man is in a serious condition in hospital after an attack on a couple in Fort William.

The man, said to be in his 70s, was flown to Glasgow Royal Infirmary following the weapon attack in Glenkingie Street in the Caol area of the Highland town at about 8.30pm on Tuesday.

Police said he is in a serious but stable condition while a woman in her sixties was released from Belford Hospital in Fort William after treatment.

A 49-year-old man has been detained in connection with the incident and officers said inquiries are continuing.

A force spokesman said: “Emergency services attended an address at Glenkingie Street in the Caol area of Fort William following a report of a disturbance.

“A 49-year-old man has been detained in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing at this time.

“The public in the local community are thanked for their patience and understanding whilst the matter was dealt with by officers.”
