A knife-wielding robber made off with a till from a McDonald's restaurant in a 'terrifying' incident.

Police are appealing for information after a man entered the outlet at the Showcase Leisure Park near Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, at around 2.20am on Thursday.

He threatened female staff members with a knife and then moved behind the counter and demanded cash.

He fled with the till on foot in the direction of Hollywood Bowl and Viewfield Road.

At around 4.50am, police received a report of people acting suspiciously on waste ground near Sharp Avenue, and the till was recovered.

The suspect is described as 6ft and of medium build, and he was wearing dark trainers with a white rim, grey jogging bottoms, a grey hooded top and a black jacket.

He also had a checked cream/brown scarf covering his face.

Detective Sergeant David Lamont, of Coatbridge CID, said: “This was a particularly terrifying incident for staff and customers involved.

“Thankfully no-one was injured, however the staff have all been left extremely distressed.

“I would appeal to anyone who has any information relating to this incident or saw anyone in the Sharp Avenue area of Kirkwood at that time to contact Coatbridge CID on 101.”
