Hearing held in bid to bring prosecution against Harry Clarke

The first court hearing has been held for judges to examine the bid to bring a private prosecution against Glasgow bin lorry crash driver Harry Clarke.

A procedural hearing in front of three High Court judges took place in Edinburgh after lawyers for relatives of three of those who died submitted a Bill for Criminal 
Letters.

The family of crash victims Jack and Lorraine Sweeney and their granddaughter Erin McQuade are pursuing the court bid.

Stephenie Tait, Jacqueline Morton and Gillian Ewing also died when the bin lorry went out of control in Queen Street in December 2014.

Judges are also considering a similar application to prosecute William Payne, lodged by the families of students Mhairi Convy and Laura Stewart, who were knocked down and killed in Glasgow in 2010.

The Crown Office has already rejected both bids.

Lord Carloway, sitting with Lady Paton and Lord Bracadale, sat to determine further procedure during a hearing yesterday, the details of which cannot be reported for legal reasons.
