It is understood the alleged incident took place at the jail where Ms Frank, of Bo’ness, West Lothian, works in May and was arrested and charged weeks later.

Saughton hosts some of Scotland’s most dangerous prisoners including serial killer Peter Tobin who is currently serving three life sentences for murdering Polish student Angelika Kluk, Scots schoolgirl Vicky Hamilton and Essex teenager Dinah McNicol.

To contain the spread of coronavirus, last month a total of 19 prisoners were released early.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm that a 35-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in connection with an offence contrary to the Prisons (Scotland) Act.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and she is expected to appear in court at a later date.”

The Scottish Prison Service said: “We don’t comment on staff.”
