Bouncer to be sentenced for assault

A BOUNCER is to be sentenced next month after pleading guilty to the savage attack on a city centre club goer.

Allan MacDougall, 31, head of security for the upmarket Montpelier pub group at the time, kicked and punched reveller Gary Smith, 18, before standing on his neck outside Garibaldi’s on Hanover Street.

MacDougall had originally faced an attempted murder charge when he appeared in court last week but prosecutors accepted his guilty plea to the reduced charge of assaulting Mr Smith to the danger of his life on Boxing Day in 2010.

Prosecutor Tim Niven-Smith told the High Court in Glasgow how MacDougall had rained a number of blows on the apprentice joiner. Mr Smith had been at the club with his brother Stephen when trouble first flared and off-duty bouncer MacDougall was injured. Defence lawyer Gordon Jackson QC said what had been described in court was “far from the whole picture”.

The bar – which had been closed for a month last year after the attack – was allowed to reopen by licensing chiefs.
