Bomb disposal team explode '˜substances' after clearing Dundee street

A bomb disposal unit has carried out a small controlled explosion after some residents were evacuated from a street in Dundee.

A bomb disposal team has been called to an "ongoing" incident in Dundee's Fairnbairn Street.

Police called in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team after finding substances that raised concerns during a search of a property in Fairbairn Street last night.

The search came after a 65-year-old man was arrested in relation to alleged telecommunication offences on Tuesday.

Police said a small number of properties were evacuated as a safety precaution after the substances were found.

The EOD team then conducted a small controlled explosion to dispose of the substances in what was considered to be the safest possible manner.

Residents are now being allowed to return to their homes.

Police said items had been seized for forensic analysis and the investigation was ongoing.

Superintendent Graeme Murdoch, head of operations at Tayside division, said: “We understand that it is always concerning for the community when there is this level of police activity and we require the advice and services of our EOD colleagues.

“However, public safety remains our highest priority and, in this case, that has been no different and we have tried to balance this with the impact on local residents.

“I would seek to reassure all residents in Fairbairn Street and the immediate vicinity that there is no ongoing threat to their safety.

“I can now confirm that following a full search we are satisfied that the property concerned is completely safe and we are in the process of advising affected residents that they are free to return to their homes.

“We would like to thank all of the people affected by this incident for their full co-operation and patience, which has assisted us greatly in ensuring a safe outcome for all.”
