Banning orders for trio after football riots in Glasgow

Three men were banned from attending football matches yesterday following violent riots in Glasgow last year.

Aberdeen supporters Stanley Thain, 47, Ivan George Bridge, 41, and Gary Leys, 37, were part of a mob who clashed with Rangers fans outside Ibrox subway station on 21 January, 2012.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday they were ordered to carry out a total of 720 hours of unpaid work and handed Football Banning Orders ranging from 24 to 36 months each.

This means they will be banned from all regulated football matches throughout the whole of the UK for a period of between two and three years.

Thain and Bridge previously pled guilty to forming part of a disorderly crowd, engaging in and challenging others to fight. Leys previously admitted shouting and swearing and repeatedly trying to breach a police cordon.

Afterwards, Joe Stewart, football liaison prosecutor for the West of Scotland, said such behaviour “will not be tolerated”.

He added: “We will do all in our power to combat football related violence or disorder of any kind and will continue to bring those who perpetrate such crimes to justice.”
