Officers have begun door-to-door inquiries and gathering CCTV images.

Detective Inspector Colin Drummond, of Irvine CID, said: “Due to the extent of his injuries, we have been unable to speak to the man just yet. I would urge anyone who may have been in the local area at the time the incident occurred to get in touch with police as soon as possible so that we can identify who is responsible for this violent assault.”
