Appeal after '˜cowardly' attackers assault 84-year-old man in Glasgow

POLICE have appealed for information about a 'disgusting and cowardly' attack on an elderly man in Glasgow.

The 84-year-old was taken to hospital with facial injuries after being assaulted in Govan’s Golspie Street on Saturday.

A fundraising appeal has been launched for the victim, who has been named as Willie on social media, with online sites posting pictures of his injuries.

Officers are hunting two attackers who targeted the pensioner after he got off the number 26 bus at about 5.30pm.

The suspects, who were both wearing dark clothing, ran off south along Golspie Street.

The pensioner was helped by members of the public who called an ambulance. He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he was treated for facial injuries.

Detective Constable Gordon Reid, from Govan CID, said: “This was a disgusting and cowardly attack on an elderly man who had been out enjoying an afternoon with his friends.

“In particular I would like to speak to a man who was seen getting off the bus after the victim, which had been travelling west from Govan Road.

“He is described as white, between 35 and 40 years old, with short dark hair and glasses. He was wearing a brown jacket, dark trousers and was carrying shopping bags.

“I would also like to speak to the members of the public who went to the victim’s aid as they may have information that could assist with our inquiries.”

A fundraising page set up to help the victim has raised almost £1,000, double its initial target.

The site published a photo of his injuries along with a statement which read: “I am asking the good people who read this to help with anything they can to enable Willie to go some way to restore his faith in the human race.

“I hope that this can go a small way to let him know that people do care and want to help him. In turn I hope this can help him to restore his confidence to be able to continue to go about his business without any fear.”

The father-of-seven, who also has seven grandchildren, is regular at The Red Lion bar in Paisley Road West, who shared a picture of the wounds of his attack on Facebook.
