The former Liverpool defender is said to have been stabbed in the head and the buttocks
Derby County player Andre Wisdom is recovering in hospital after he was the target of “an unprovoked assault and robbery”.
The Championship player was reportedly visiting relatives in the Toxteth area of Liverpool when he was targeted.
An official statement from the Rams confirmed that Wisdom was recovering hospital following the attack, in which he was reportedly stabbed.
It is expected that Wisdom will make a full recovery.
Merseyside Police are now investigating the incident.
What has Derby County said?
Following the incident Derby County released a statement that said: "Derby County Football Club can confirm that Andre Wisdom has been the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery.
"He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital, where he is in a stable condition.
"Merseyside police are investigating and the Club will focus its efforts on supporting Andre and his family.
"Therefore we will not be making any further comment at this time."
What has Merseyside police said?
A spokesperson for the Merseyside Police revealed that the former Liverpool player had been targeted by four men wearing masks and wielding knives.
Wisdom’s designer watch was stolen and he is said to have suffered wounds to the buttocks and the head.
Detective Sergeant Richie Shillito said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around Beaumont Street around 4.30am who saw anyone or anything suspicious to contact us.
"Similarly I would ask for anyone who captured anything significant on dash-cam footage to get in touch as they may have information which is vital to our investigation.
“The investigation is in the early stages but we are determined to find the people responsible for this assault and robbery and I would urge anyone who knows anything to come forward."
Andre Wisdom career
Starting his career at Liverpool, Wisdom progressed through Liverpool’s youth setup, before making a breakthrough under Brendan Rodgers.
He enjoyed loan spells to Derby County, West Brom, Norwich City and Red Bull Salzburg before returning to England.
Wisdom joined Derby from Liverpool in 2017 for a reported fee of £3million after making 14 appearances for the Reds.
He has featured in 20 games for Derby in all competitions this season and played the full 90 minutes in Saturday's home league win against Reading.
