Is this the best facial in Edinburgh?

It’s time to bring out the big guns when it comes to my increasingly exhausted-looking skin. And when I say guns, I mean laser.

The Clear + Brilliant treatment, which is now available at Edinburgh’s Zen Lifestyle, features a fractional diode version of these. It applies controlled trauma to the skin, via thermal channels, and can help boost collagen production and improve the visible signs of ageing.

The makers, who also offer therapies Fraxel and Thermage, suggest it as an alternative to more invasive procedures, especially as there’s practically no down time.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t going to be a relaxing experience.

However, my therapist, Lauren, does give me a blissful hand and arm massage, while the numbing cream is working its magic on my face. This pretreatment treat is very effective, and I’m totally chilled by the time she picks up the laser.

It’s passed across every plane of my face, using a sort of cross-hatching method.

It doesn’t hurt at all. The sensation is a kind of scratching, which gets more intense near my lips, but it feels quite strangely pleasurable. The whole process takes about 20 minutes and Lauren includes my turkey neck too.

Afterwards, my face looks quite pink and feels extremely hot, but I’m still able to get the bus home without feeling too conspicuous. I’m sure the other passengers just think I’m a bit embarrassed about something. This high colour fades over 24 hours. For a week afterwards, I use very plain and tolerable skincare - a Murad pack, from Zen, for £32 - to moisturise and protect my skin from the sun with a physical (rather than chemical) barrier.

You’re also advised to steer clear of saunas and swimming pools, and avoid sunbathing or sunbeds for a week or so.

A few days after the treatment, my skin feels slightly sandpapery. This stage doesn’t last long, before a radiant and fresher layer is revealed. I feel glowing, for the first time in ages, and my lingering dry patches have vanished. I’d say my pores look a bit less prominent too.

Very impressive results. If I got this treatment again, I’d have it about ten days before a big occasion, for a perfectly timed glow-up.

Clear + Brilliant takes around 60 minutes and is £270 for one session, a course of three is £760 and six is £1520: Zen Lifestyle, 25-27 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh (0131-477 3535, www.zen-lifestyle.com)
