Humans are thought to have kept cats as pets for over 10,000 years, with the first domesticated felines evolving from African wildcats.
Since then they have become the world’s second most popular pet, just behind dogs when it comes to the animals we most like to welcome in to our homes and our hearts.
In the UK alone there are more than 10 million feline friends in households.
And there are a huge range of types of cat to choose from - according to The International Cat Association there are 73 ‘standardised breeds’, along with a bewildering number of crosses.
Cats are often thought of as being less loving than their canine colleagues, but this isn’t necessarily the case.
In fact many breeds are known for their affectionate nature and are just as keen to snuggle up to their owners as a loving Labrador or snuggly Poodle.
Here are the 10 breeds of cat considered to be the most loving.

5. Sphynx
The fact that the Sphynx doesn't have any hair means it can get a bit chilly - and its owner's body heat is just the ticket for it to warm up. That means there will always be cuddles. Plus this breed of cat just naturally loves snuggles - and play - even if it's warm enough, so expect plenty of purrs at the same time. These are seriously loving cats. 6. Siamese
"We are Siameeiz, if you pleeiz". The Siamese cats in Disney's 'Lady and the Tramp' may have been villians but this is no factual reflection on the breed. In fact they are known for their affectionate personalities and will often follow their owner around the house gazing at them with utter and complete adoration. | Canva/Getty Images

7. Scottish Fold
Taylor Swift's favourite breed of cat is named after its distictive 'folded' ears caused by a genetic mutation. This is a feline that is so affectionate that it really doesn't like being left alone - preferring to be curled up on or against its beloved owner at all times. If you want a cat that you can leave in the house while you go out to work, this probably isn't the breed for you. Prospective owners should also be aware that due to the selective breeding this cat is prone to Osteochondrodysplasia (Scottish Fold Disease), causing abnormal bone growth and skeletal deformities, arthritis and severe pain. | AFP via Getty Images

8. Persian
The Persian is a cat that is as cuddly as it looks - and that is 'very'. The bonus with these kitties is that they are incredibly lazy, so when they curl up on your lap they are probably there for the long run. Unfortunately, in common with other breeds with 'flat faces' they can suffer from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) which results in breathing and feeding problems. | AFP via Getty Images
