Priced from £37,880 after the Plug-in Car Grant, the ID.4 1st Edition will arrive in dealerships from March and features unique internal and external badging and a high standard specification.

Standard kit includes 20-inch “Drammen” alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, tinted rear windows, and a reversing camera. Inside, heated ArtVelours microfleece seats and a heated steering wheel are standard, as is a 10-inch infotainment system, 30-colour ambient lighting, adaptive cruise control, front assist, and lane assist.

The ID.4 is the second Volkswagen built on the new MEB EV platform. It will eventually be offered with a choice of motor and battery specifications, and with four-wheel-drive but the 1st Edition will exclusively feature the two-wheel-drive arrangement with the larger 77kWh battery.

With 201bhp and 227lb ft the single-motor model will cover 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 99mph. Range is quoted at 310 miles and the ID.4 benefits from rapid charging compatibility of up to 125kW, allowing it to add up to 199 miles of range in just 30 minutes.

ID. family product manager at Volkswagen UK, Joe Laurence, said: “With the popularity of SUVs as high as ever, we are proud to be introducing our first all-electric contender in the form of the ID.4. Its external dimensions are similar to the Tiguan, but thanks to the MEB platform and the packaging benefits of an electric drivetrain it boasts even more interior space along with that all-important lofty driving position.

“The ID.4 is also our first electric vehicle that can be fitted with an optional tow bar, suitable for trailers weighing up to 1,000kg. This really is an incredibly practical car, and with the batteries mounted under the passenger compartment, it has a low centre of gravity which equips it with great driving dynamics and balanced handling. We know our customers are going to love it.”
