OAPs fed McDonalds food after NHS Highland blunder

OAPs at a Highland care home were fed a McDonald’s takeaway of chicken nuggets and chips after an NHS blunder.

Health bosses have apologised after residents at Invernevis House in Fort William were given takeaway food instead of a prepared meal.

The problem arose when the in-house chef was absent on Friday, 27 December.

A request should have been made to nearby Belford Hospital for their canteen to prepare the meals, but NHS Highland has admitted their had been some “miscommunication”.

This forced care home staff in sending out for a McDonald’s meal.

A health board spokesman said: “Normally, when the chef if unable to come in for whatever reason the manager puts a request to Belford Hospital.

“We would like to apologise for a situation which arose at Invernevis House Care Home on Friday 27 December.

“As a result of a breakdown in communication and an error of judgement, the established procedures were not followed.”

NHS Highland’s Lochaber district manager Joanna Hynd added: “The main priority of the care home manager was to ensure residents had something to eat.

“There will be a review of the decisions taken.”
