WOW World, which runs around a dozen Baby Sensory and Toddler Sense classes in the area every week, was previously refused permission to turn former offices in Wardpark Industrial Estate into a combined leisure and education facility.

This was on the grounds it would clash with the area’s designation as a light industry zone, despite several other family-friendly businesses already operating in Wardpark.

The decision was referred to North Lanarkshire Council’s local review body, which voted unanimously in favour of the application. Several members of the committee also called for revision of the planning guidelines which led to the initial refusal.

The reversal was welcomed by WOW World, who have been trying to establish a permanent location in Cumbernauld for years.

Gail Macdonald, regional coordinator for WOW World, said: “Until now we have been renting halls for our classes but as we need to set up and take down our equipment, which is different for every class as children never do the same activity twice, that is very time consuming.

“Having our own premises will also allow the local franchise holders, Laura Wilson and Frances Furlong, to expand the learning opportunities they are able to offer families in Cumbernauld and the wider area. We’re delighted with this decision.”
