The £3 million investment would see the creation of 13 units providing trade counter, industrial and workshop space for small businesses in the new town.

Northern Trust confirmed that it has submitted plans for the additional 30,000 square feet adjacent to its existing Eliburn Industrial Estate.

Tom Parkinson, director at Northern Trust, said: “We have been expanding our multi-let industrial portfolio in Scotland, and this new development will complement our existing ownership at Eliburn which we acquired a couple of years ago.

“The development forms part of our on-going strategy to acquire and develop multi-let industrial assets to support the SME [small and medium-sized enterprise] business community across Scotland’s Central Belt.”

If the planning application is approved, work on the site could commence next year.

Northern Trust’s portfolio in Scotland currently extends to more than 440,000 sq ft, with the development of the first phase at Turnhouse Court in Newbridge, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, set to add an additional 28,000 sq ft.

The portfolio extends from Dumfries, northwards to Wishaw, Cumbernauld and Perth, and eastwards to Grangemouth, Livingston and the west of Edinburgh and forms part of Northern Trust’s circa eight million sq ft portfolio.

The commercial and industrial portfolio is actively managed by Northern Trust’s in-house surveying practice, Whittle Jones. The latter business runs a string of regional offices.

Northern Trust is a privately owned company, established in 1962.
