Harriet Clugston is data and investigations editor for NationalWorld, leading on investigative projects and data-driven journalism, including our interactive charts.
She is a multi-award winning journalist, having won a Royal Statistical Society Statistical Excellence in Journalism Award, as well as Data Journalist of the Year at the Regional Press Awards (alongside Aimee Stanton, another member of NationalWorld.com’s data and investigations team). She has also been shortlisted for a British Journalism Award, for the Society of Editors Media Freedom Awards, and for the Private Eye Paul Foot Award for investigative journalism while leading the wider National World investigations team in a project to expose the shortcomings in the criminal justice system’s efforts to tackle modern slavery and human trafficking.
Harriet is passionate about the fight to end violence against women and covering topics surrounding gender equality, as well as speaking up for the regions and devolved nations of the UK, by highlighting geographical inequalities hidden in data which so often go unnoticed by much of the UK media.
She has exposed disparities in bringing charges for crimes of sexual violence against ethnic minority victims; the spiralling costs of supermarket value range products during the cost of living crisis; and the UK police probing women suspected of having illegal abortions.
Originally from Derbyshire, she now lives in Edinburgh with her cat Louis Furroux.
