From slashers with heart-pounding jump scares to psychological horrors which leave behind a lingering sense of dread, the scariest movies of all time have been revealed for 2026.
Now in its seventh year, the Science of Scare Project measures people’s physiological response while watching horror films. Over several weeks each year, a 250-strong audience panel is subjected to some of the scariest English language releases ever with their heart rates tracked and monitored per each film.
The films are then given a total overall “Scare Score”, which combines how much the audience’s average heart was raised during the runtime compared to their average resting heart rate, the natural variation in time between heartbeats (the bigger the drop the stronger the stress) and their highest recorded heart rate, which signals the most scary, stressful or exciting moments of a film, such as jump scares.
Including Backrooms, Obsession, Hokum, and Insidious: Out of the Further, only five 2026 releases were able to crack to top fifty scariest films, with A24 horror Undertone named the most frightening film of the year so far.
Despite not ranking, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film delivered two record-breaking jump scares where heart-rates peaked at 134 BPM. The comedic tone of the latter portion of the adaptation played against it, however.
So if you’re looking to give yourself nightmares, here are 15 of the scariest horror films of all time according to the Science of Scare Project.

1. Sinister
Released in 2012, Sinister has held the title of scariest movie of all time for a fourth consecutive year. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film stars Ethan Hawke as a crime writer who moves his family into a house where a series of gruesome murders once took place. His research leads him to some horrific found footage which is when things take a dark turn. Sinister has a Scare Score of 96, with heart rates spiking at 131 BPM. | Summit Entertainment / Lionsgate / Contributed

2. Host
Shot and produced remotely during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Host is a horror film set entirely on Zoom — a premise which is already terrifying enough. Directed by Rob Savage, it was filmed by each actor in their own home and follows a group of six friends who hire a medium to hold a séance over Zoom while in lockdown. Things quickly go wrong when an evil spirit begins to invade their homes. Coming in second, Host has a total Scare Score of 95, with heart rates peaking at 130 BPM. | Shudder

3. Skinamarink
Coming in third is experimental 2022 horror Skinamarink, with an overall Scare Score of 91. It follows two children who wake up in the middle of the night only to discover that their father is missing and that all of the windows and doors of their home have vanished. Directed by Kye Edward Ball, the biggest scare of the film saw the average heart-rate of the audience peak at 113 BPM. | Shudder

4. Insidious
The first James Wan film to appear among the scariest films of all time is Insidious. Until Resident Evil (2026) it held the record for the highest heart-rate (BPM) spike of any movie on this list, though it holds an overall Scare Score of 90/100. Patrick Wilson — who will also appear later — and Rose Byrne star alongside Ty Sympkins as a family who move into a new house for a fresh start, only for their son to mysteriously fall into a coma as paranormal events begin to occur. | Momentum Pictures / Alliance Films
