Dolphin puts on spectacular show in Highland waters

THIS is the moment a bottlenose dolphin was caught 'effortlessly flying' on camera as it performed a spectacular jump in Scottish waters.

After breaching the water, the dolphin was photographed mid-air against a coastal backdrop in the Highlands.

Witnesses said the 350kg animal jumped between 20ft and 30ft high whilst frolicking with others in the Comarty Firth.

The spectacular event was witnessed by tourists on a wildlife watching boat trip near the North Sutor.

Sarah Pern, 41, who owns EcoVentures, captured the scene aboard the RIB ‘Saorsa’ whilst out with passengers at the end of July.

She said: “We encountered a quite active group of bottlenose dolphins. There was a lot of dolphin activity that week. But this was pretty spectacular.

“The dolphin did quite a few spectacular breaches with Cromarty in the background.

“It was astonishing. The picture shows 350kg of dolphin effortlessly flying. It’s the power in the tail that made this possible.”

Bottlenose dolphins are well-known for their highly-sociable nature and live in groups of up to 10 in coastal areas and up to 25 off-shore.

They often hunt in teams and feed on shrimp, squid, eels and of course, fish such as salmon.
