Scots singer Jenny Douglas braves TV judges for a chance of West End stardom

A SCOTTISH teenager is among 20 hopefuls taking part in a TV contest to win a lead role in a West End musical.

Jenny Douglas, 18, from Edinburgh, will be seen tonight competing to land the lead in Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest musical The Wizard Of Oz.

Miss Douglas is taking acting classes and undergoing vocal training at college in the hope of emulating her father, who once sang with Stevie Wonder.

The 20 hopefuls will be seen going through their paces on BBC1's Over The Rainbow tonight – with only half making it through to the next stage.

The other competitors include a mother of twins, a glamour girl who had a role in BBC1's Hustle and a finalist from the 2005 series of Britain's Next Top Model. There is also a French contestant who moved to the UK with the hope of finding West End success.

Fellow contestant Steph Fearon, 21, from London, comes from musical stock. Her mother Dee Fearon scored a dance hit with Let Me Be Your Fantasy while her dad was the man behind 80s hitmakers Galaxy.

Over The Rainbow follows other hugely successful TV talent searches by Lloyd Webber such as I'd Do Anything and Any Dream Will Do.

Graham Norton will again be hosting the show, while the judging panel is made up of Sheila Hancock, Charlotte Church and EastEnders star John Partridge.

The panel will choose ten of the contestants to continue on to the first live show next Saturday, but the public will also be able to save one of the rejects.
