Eddie Redmayne wins the least-coveted prize in Hollywood

He has won an Oscar, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for his acting prowess, but Eddie '¨Redmayne may not wish to find room on his mantlepiece for the latest award to come his way.

The British star has scored the dubious honour of being recognised by the Razzies, the annual roll call of ignominy that recognises some of the worst films and performances.

Although the 34-year-old was last night attending the Academy Awards after being nominated for best actor for his role in The Danish Girl, it was his turn in the widely panned Jupiter Ascending that led to his alternative gong.

The actor was named winner of a Golden Raspberry best supporting actor award for the critically derided science fiction space opera, described by New York magazine as “inane from first frame to last”.

John Wilson, the founder of the Razzies, said Jupiter Ascending was a deserved winner, or depending on your perspective, loser.

“It’s an insane movie and the centre of the insanity is Eddie Redmayne becomes emperor of the universe, and apparently he got there by overacting,” he explained.

“Of the five films that were nominated, Jupiter Ascending was the most entertainingly awful film.”

However, Redmayne escaped lightly compared to the team behind the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. The movie, based on the bestselling novel by EL James, swept the board at the ceremony in Los Angeles, held the day before the Oscars.

The film took the worst screenplay prize, with the worst actor and actress awards going to its stars, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. The duo also won worst screen combo, with the movie tied for worst film with Fantastic Four.

The reboot of the popular Marvel Comics franchise was named worst remake/rip-off or sequel, and also saw Josh Trank win a Razzie for his role in the director’s chair.

The Big Bang theory star Kaley Cuoco was deemed worst supporting actress for her performance in The Wedding Ringer and voice contribution to Alvin & The 
Chipmunks: Road Chip.

The Razzie Redeemer Award, which is given to a previous Razzie Award 
winner who has “gone on to do better work”, went to Sylvester Stallone, who was widely expected to win the best supporting actor Oscar last night for his performance in Creed, the latest chapter of the long-running Rocky franchise.

The Razzies, which were launched in 1980 as a spoof of Hollywood’s awards season, were selected this year by 943 voting members from 48 US states and 20 foreign 
countries.

Leonardo DiCaprio was being tipped to pick up his first Oscar for his role in The Revenant. The film – which was the big winner at the BAFTAs – leads the Oscars pack with 12 nominations.

Charlotte Rampling, 70, was nominated for best actress for her role in 45 Years, alongside Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, 21, for Brooklyn, in which she plays a homesick immigrant in New York.

The films up for best picture were The Big Short, Bridge Of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room and 
Spotlight.
