Her estranged husband Derek Mitchell claimed after attending a wedding at Cameron House, on Loch Lomond, Miss McGuire attacked him, breaking his rib, as he lay sleeping.

He also alleged she “boiled over with anger” after a local fair when he failed to watch her two daughters dancing and punched him on the head.

He told Paisley Sheriff Court he grabbed Miss McGuire’s hand in self-defence, which resulted in her finger being broken.

He also denied assaulting her at five-star Marr Hall hotel in Bishopton and at 29 Private Members Club in Glasgow city centre after a Cash for Kids event in December 2011.

Under questioning by defence solicitor-advocate Billy Lavelle, he denied attempting to punch Rangers shareholder Mike Ashley at the Cash for Kids event.

Mitchell said: “I know who he is now, I don’t even remember seeing him there. I certainly never threw or tried to throw a punch at anyone. He’s a big guy. I think I would know about it if I tried to throw a punch.”

Mitchell said in July 2011 the couple attended a friend’s wedding at Cameron House with their son, Oliver. He said he was with guests Andy Goram and Barry Hughes while Miss McGuire was with Jacqueline Hughes, and Oliver was being watched by a nanny.

He claimed he later went to bed on his own, only to be woken by Miss McGuire.

“I went to sleep, the next thing I knew I was getting dragged off the bed, I was getting punched, kicked and stamped on.

“I was half asleep, I was probably drunk, I was in a state of shock. I just went in to a ball to try and protect myself and she eventually stopped.”

Asked why he had been attacked, he said it was because Miss McGuire had had to go to reception to get a key to access the room. Mr Lavelle asked Mitchell how it left him feeling and he said he was “gutted”.

The jury heard he suffered two black eyes and a broken rib.

It was put to him Miss McGuire alleges he was violent towards her.

He replied: “I am very aware of the main reason I am here. Suzie is a terrorist, she has terrorised me for nearly two years now and she has used, unforgivably the children as a weapon.”

Mitchell was asked about the alleged assault on his wife in May 2011 after the Eaglesham Fair when he is accused of breaking her finger, in front of their son Oliver and her two girls Millie, ten, and Daisy, eight. He accepted he caused Miss McGuire’s injury although again claimed it was in self-defence.

He said: “Unfortunately I am all too aware she’s a southpaw, she’s got a left hand, she punched me twice on the head in quick succession then she came at me again.”

He claimed she went to hit him with her hand “like a claw” as though she might slap him.

The father-of-two rejected the allegation he bent her finger back in a bid to wrestle car keys from her. Asked about the allegation of assaulting his wife at Marr Hall in September 2011, Mitchell denied digging his fingers into her. He also denied calling her a “slut”. He added: “I did not say that. To call my wife a slut in public would be embarrassing to me. That would be saying I am married to a slut.”

Mitchell denies the charges and the trial before Sheriff Susan Sinclair continues.
