William Wallace namesake marries at Wallace Monument

William Wallace has tied the knot - at the top of the Wallace Monument.

The tourist attraction played host to the nuptials, which saw the Scottish hero’s namesake, 55, marry his long lost love Sue, 51.

And Mary Wallace, celebrant at the humanist service, also shares a name with the knight.

William, from Glasgow, and Sue, from Liverpool, met over 30 years ago, but after going their separate ways got together in 2012 when they reunited in Liverpool.

They have been together ever since and got engaged in 2016.

Both now live in Liverpool and saw the Wallace Monument as the natural choice for their big day.

William said: “Mary was the one that made our wedding day the special day we shall never forget. She is a wonderful warm compassionate woman who built our service to who we both are.”

Mary admitted she was always happy to conduct ceremonies for other members of the Wallace clan, adding: “Originally they were looking for a castle in central Scotland, but after exploring a few options, I suggested that there was only really one place to get married given William’s name and that was The Wallace Monument in Stirling.

“It’s been a real pleasure working with the couple to create a memorable and special day for them and I offer the new Mr and Mrs Wallace my warmest congratulations.”

While proposals and intimate weddings are common at the Stirling monument, it is believed to be the first time a William Wallace has got married there.
