Volunteers sought to greet tourists at Stirling's Wallace Monument

A VOLUNTEER programme has been launched for people willing to welcome visitors to Scotland's national Monument to Battle of Stirling Bridge hero Sir William Wallace.

The 220-foot sandstone tower, in memory of  Wallace, who led his men to victory at the 1297 Battle, and whose life was glamourised in the blockbuster film Braveheart, attracted over 100,000 tourists last year from 80 different countries.

Now, Stirling District Tourism, the not-for-profit organisation which is responsible for the operation of the Monument, is hoping that volunteers will support the staff team in maintaining a high standard of service for visitors.

Hannah Lucas, Visitor Attraction Manager at The National Wallace Monument, said: “We strive to make everyone’s visit as enjoyable and special as possible.

“Therefore, this summer, we are introducing a new and exciting Volunteers Scheme. With help from a team of volunteers we will be able to enhance our existing visitor experience and ensure that everyone receives a world class welcome.

“If you feel that you have the passion and dedication to join our team we would love to hear from you.”

No qualifications are required, and the Monument team would like to hear from prospective volunteers with friendly personalities who are happy to talk to visitors.

Full training will be provided. However, organisers say a passion for Scottish history or the ability to speak another language would be an added bonus.

An Information session is being held at 7pm on 30 June, which potential volunteers are invited to attend to learn more about the opportunities available in the new volunteer programme.

Those who want to attend are asked to sign up to a session through The National Wallace Monument website, or by e-mailing [email protected]. The deadline for final applications is 7 July.

Volunteers will start their new roles at The National Wallace Monument during the main summer season.
