Video: Musketeers take aim at Edinburgh Castle

It was a case of history repeating itself at Edinburgh Castle last weekend.

Over 60 participants took part in a re-enactment of the siege of 1650, when Oliver Cromwell led an English invasion after executing Charles I.

Dressed in full military attire and barking orders with utmost gusto, the participants - some coming from as far afield as southern Germany - produced a colourful and historically authentic event complete with impressive cannon fire and rippling musket volleys.

While the weather refused to play its part in on the day, it did little to dampen the spirits of an enthusiatic audience who seemed to find their bearings once the initial blast of the cannon had shaken the ground they stood on.

This was a vivid impression of what war was actually like at the capital’s most famous landmark in the 17th century.

We decided to brave the elements on Saturday and capture some of the highlights.
