Theatre review: String

The easy confidence with which this befuddling new play by Lauren Jackson is performed suggests that it's a deliberate provocation.

Star rating: *

Venue: Greenside @ Nicolson Square (Venue 209)

Jack is commissioned to create a new artwork by an investor and presents her with a collection of string with pictures, magazine cuttings and sundry detritus attached to it.

Although billed as a comedy, “exploring the nature of communication” no less, there’s nothing amusing about the relentless repetition of the phrases: “the string is the thing” and “the string is a magical thing”. Eventually it acts like a hypnotic mantra on the audience, clearing the mind of but one thought: is it possible to literally die of boredom?

Until 20 August. Today 10pm.
