Theatre review: Still Here

It must be tricky to relate the experience of volunteering in Calais' Jungle refugee camp without succumbing to over-earnestness, and, sadly, Rachel Partington's well-meaning production doesn't quite succeed.

Venue: ZOO at St Mary’s South Lawn (Venue 91)

The verbatim sections of the script – taken from interviews with Eritrean refugees whom Partington visited last year – contain vital insights, but Partington’s poetic surrounding narrative, physical theatre flourishes and unearned climax are distracting from the core message. Anyone invested in finding out more about the refugee crisis should still consider it important (if inexpertly crafted) viewing.
