Tennis legends tournament amongst major events lined up for Edinburgh

A TENNIS legends tournament, a mass cycling event and an international diving competition are among the major new events being lined up for Scotland’s capital, it has emerged.

It is hoped the likes of John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker, Jim Courier and Pat Cash will be among the stars to grace the city if a bid to attract the ATP Champions Tour is successful.

The event has already been successfully staged at London’s Royal Albert Hall and the expanded EICC, due to open next year, has been offered to organisers.

Talks are underway about staging “Sky Ride,” a mass participation bike ride, across the city, following the success of Glasgow’s participation in a nationwide campaign aimed at getting more than a million people riding a bike by 2013.

Meanwhile the new-look Royal Commonwealth Pool, which is due to reopen next month, is being lined up to play host to its first international event, the FINA World Diving Series. The complex is already due to be a venue in the Commonwealth Games when it is staged in Scotland in 2014.

Edinburgh is also due to host a swim team training camp at the pool for Britain’s Olympic hopefuls, as well as a pre-Olympic international basketball tournament.
