Delight in the sound of a full symphony orchestra, brought to life by the energy and passion of Scotland’s outstanding young musicians!

This April, NYOS Symphony Orchestra welcomes multi-award-winning Scottish guitar virtuoso Sean Shibe, a celebrated and versatile soloist with a critically acclaimed discography who is building a reputation as one of the world’s leading guitarists. Sean performs Lotta Wennäkoski’s guitar concerto Susurrus with NYOS Symphony Orchestra at our spring concerts in Glasgow and Edinburgh, presented as part of Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s 2022-23 season. The orchestra will also perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 7, a boundary pushing early 20th Century masterpiece.

NYOS Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by the exceptional Catherine Larsen-Maguire. Catherine has a deep insight into the life of an orchestral musician, having spent ten years as Principal Bassoonist for the Komische Opera Berlin. She has since turned her focus to conducting and become a sought-after conductor in Europe and South America. She places great emphasis on working with young musicians and is in high demand as a conductor for youth orchestras and in music colleges around the world.

“I am so much looking forward to experiencing the energy and enthusiasm of the NYOS young musicians again. Mahler 7 is one of my absolute favourite pieces and working on it and performing it with this orchestra will be so exciting. The combination of NYOS, Mahler and our charismatic soloist should ensure that the concerts will be unforgettable,” said Catherine Larsen-Maguire, Symphony Orchestra Conductor, Spring 2023

Also in April, NYOS Development Orchestra perform Grieg’s much-loved Piano Concerto in A Minor with the exceptional young Scottish pianist Ethan Loch, BBC Young Musician 2022 finalist. As well as rehearsing and performing with our musicians, Ethan will lead a workshop for the orchestra exploring his unique approach to music and relationship with sound.

NYOS Development Orchestra also perform Errollyn Wallen’s Mighty River. This powerful and thought-provoking piece combines spirituals and contemporary classical techniques to explore themes of slavery and freedom.

"Composing for the orchestra is my favourite challenge [and this] work is an especially important one for me. It is an innate human instinct to be free, just as it is a law of nature that the river should rush headlong to the sea. That is the concept behind Mighty River,” said Errollyn Wallen.

NYOS Development Orchestra welcome Natalia Luis-Bassa as conductor in residence in 2023. Natalia is a dynamic conductor and passionate advocate for young musicians. Her residency across two seasons provides continuity and will help to prepare many young musicians for a successful future audition for NYOS Symphony Orchestra. And just as importantly, the Development Orchestra offers young musicians an inspiring opportunity to become part of the NYOS community and to enjoy playing challenging orchestral repertoire with peers from across Scotland.
