Scottish masterpieces to go on display before £7m auction

AN EXHIBITION of some of Scotland’s most iconic masterpieces is being staged in Edinburgh ahead of a sale of the work. The work of the Colourists will headline the three-day exhibition, due to open at The Dovecot Studios on Tuesday.

The sale, titled British and Irish Art: Victorian – Early 20th Century – Sporting & Marine – Scottish – Irish, will take place at Sotheby’s on 10 May.

The auction will bring together what the auctioneers described as “the finest watercolours and oil paintings from the Pre-Raphaelistes to the British Impressionists”, and is expected to bring in an excess of £7 million. Among the works on view will be Francis Cadell’s The Red Fan, which as an estimated sale price of between £250,000 and £350,000, and Samuel Peploe’s Pink Rose in Glass Vase Fruit, expected to fetch between £120,000 and £180,000.
