Radar weekly: New music to the fore at Wickerman

In this week’s round-up: The Wickerman festival takes place in Dumfries and Galloway; New music highlights from Meursault, The Unwinding Hours, Errors and The Winter Tradition; plus this week’s gig picks.

It’s another happy Monday, so let’s crack on with some news, etc.

First up, it’s Wickerman on the festival front this weekend, and it’s a good year. On the main stage at the site at Dundrennan in Dumfries and Galloway you’ll see the return of Bis, as well as Bwani Junction. The goNORTH stage hosts the likes of Xavia, Stanley Odd, Fat Goth, Olympic Swimmers, Washington Irving, The Mirror Trap, Miniature Dinosaurs, Quickbeam , Blue Sky Archives, Campfires In Winter and Cafe Disco.

Over at the Solus Tent there’s United Fruit, Malcolm Middleton’s Human Don’t Be Angry, The LaFontaines, Fridge Magnets, The Birthday Suit, Chris Devotion and the Expectations, Anderson McGinty Webster Ward and Fisher, Martin John Henry, Holy Mountain, The Machine Room, Beerjacket, Hector Bizerk, Salo, There Will Be Fireworks, and Hey Enemy.

Not a bad selection of new Scottish music we’re sure you’ll agree. Tickets are still available at the website.

NEW MUSIC

Meursault’s new album, Something for the Weakened, is out today and it’s a smasher. Get your hands on it in good record shops and on the Song, By Toad website.

The Winter Tradition’s debut album, Gradients, is also out today on Kittiwake. Find out more at their Bandcamp.

• Much excitement at the unveiling of the opening track from the new Unwinding Hours album, Afterlives. ‘Break’ was posted on Chemikal Underground’s Soundcloud page. The label is offering it for pre-order now, and it will be released on August 20.

Errors also posted a new track on SoundCloud called ‘Relics’ which is definitely worth a listen.

ALL WEEK: King Tuts Summer Nights continues with headliners this week including Daniel Docherty, Beerjacket, Brown Bear and the Bandits, Midnight Lion, Holy Esque, Jack Butler and The Recovery!. You might spot familiar faces in the bar with Last Year’s Girl DJing tonight’s show and, well, me on Saturday at the Jack Butler night. Any requests?

MONDAY-FRIDAY: Make Sparks are playing dates across the country, starting with the Tunnels, Aberdeen on Monday, Captain’s Rest, Glasgow on Tuesday, Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh on Wednesday, the Tolbooth, Stirling on Thursday, and Fury’s, Ayr on Friday.

WEDNESDAY: Peenko presents Mitchell Museum at the Captain’s Rest, Glasgow, along with NYC acts Jo Schornikow and Scott Rudd. Tickets.

THURSDAY: The Winter Tradition celebrate the release of Gradients with support from LightGuides and Radar Prize winners Sebastian Dangerfield, at Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh.

THURSDAY: The John Knox Sex Club’s Pre-Reformation night is at Nice’n’Sleazy in Glasgow - the band is about to take a 12-month hiatus while they lose a member to travel, so are sending him off to China on a high note with support from North American War, Gav Prentice, and The Big Rory Anderson Band.

THURSDAY: Darren Vincent aka Yaya Club is playing a set at Vespbar, Glasgow.
