Preview: Michael McIntyre, Edinburgh Playhouse

YOU either get Michael McIntyre or you don’t.

That the baby-faced funnyman is loved by millions isn’t up for debate. But he also has his detractors - many of them fellow stand-up comics - who accuse him of being unoriginal or just plain irritating.

He insists, however, that his brand of anecdotal and observational comedy is harder to get right than it looks, saying, “With regard to what I do... what I’d like to say to these people is, if it’s so easy, then why don’t you do it?”

McIntyre also came under criticism about the pricing of his work-in-progress tour, which hits The Playhouse for two nights on Sunday and Monday.

Granted, you’d have to be a proper fan to fork out £31 to see him practice unfinished jokes, but reviews have been positive.

‘He didn’t tell a single gag for over an hour and a half but still had a packed Grand Opera House holding their sides trying to keep the laughter in’, opined one reviewer.
