THE Georgian Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh is ready to welcome back the public after an 18-month refurbishment – the biggest overhaul since the building opened in 1787.

The A-listed venue was unveiled by the city council yesterday after a £9.3 million investment which has seen a painstaking restoration of its architectural features, the creation of new shops and the arrival of a Jamie Oliver restaurant.

The formal opening features a gala ceilidh dance on Saturday night.
