Pictish stones to be put in new Ballater station

Pictish monuments once in a churchyard are to be relocated to a new-look Ballater railway station.

The seventh-century stones are currently in storage after being removed for conservation from their former location in the kirkyard at Tullich, Royal Deeside.

Aberdeenshire Council voted to relocate the Tullich stones to the Royal Deeside station which is currently being rebuilt after being destroyed in a fire last year.

It is set to reopen in the winter of 2017 following a £3m revamp.

Environmental planner for the council Marsaili Aspinall said the plans for the stones at the station could include “a walk back in time” to Tullich Kirk.

SNP councillor Geva Blackett said putting the stones in the station would mean more people could see them, but councillor for the area, Conservative Katrina Farquhar, said the idea had been met with “mixed” views in Ballater.

Work is ongoing to address structural instability at Tullich Kirk.
