New newspaper for northern England and SW Scotland launches

A NEW daily newspaper has launched aimed at readers in northern England and south-west Scotland.

The paper, called 24, has gone on sale priced at 40p.

The front page features a story on how children are drawn into football hooliganism.

The editorial team ran a live blog on Facebook in the run-up to their first deadline giving readers a behind-the-scenes insight into how the paper is put together.

A story about Wayne Rooney’s support for England manager Roy Hodgson, headlined “The Roy’s Done Good”, is on the back page.

The first edition also includes a column from features writer Roger Lytollis about the Stone Roses.

Described as the North’s National, the 40-page tabloid will be published from Monday to Friday and distributed from Preston in the south to Lockerbie in the north, and from Hexham in the east to Workington in the west, an area with a population of 1.15 million adults.

Published by the CN Group, whose titles include the North West Evening Mail, News & Star and Cumberland News, it includes content from the Press Association, the national news agency for the UK and Ireland, including news, sport, lifestyle, features, celebrity gossip and puzzles.

Sport will major on northern teams from Manchester and Liverpool to Newcastle and Glasgow.

The last national newspaper to launch, New Day, closed two months after its launch due to disappointing sales.
