Musicals & opera review: Emerald Diaries

There's a half-decent story buried inside this new musical, screaming to get out.

Star rating: **

Venue: Greenside @ Nicolson Square (Venue 209)

Young Andrew returns to his Leith home after working away at sea, eager to meet Mary, the Irish dancer he’s been fostering a text romance with. Meanwhile, Mary’s formidable teacher Aggie Dooley (played with real wit by Jacqueline Hannan) has a show to put on – and she’s determined the young couple will be centre stage. The presence of Edinburgh’s Irish Dance Academy is the saving grace here, providing a number of slick, routines. But the flimsy script and stilted direction drags everybody down.

Until 27 August. Today 8:40pm.
