Male Style Icons of the Week: The Stone Roses

If ticket sales are anything to go by, the musical appeal of this weekend’s TITP headliners The Stone Roses has not waned. When it comes to their style however, no comeback is necessary: it has never really gone away.

The band were the poster boys for the “baggy” look popularised by the proponents of the Madchester scene of the late 1980s and early 90s; the Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, 808 State and The Charlatans among them.

The music of the era was a marriage of jangly 60s psychedelic pop and acid house dance music, and its accompanying aesthetic was a perfect reflection of this; blending mod and hippy style with rave culture uniform, with a dash of football casual thrown in, referencing the working class roots of the bands, the fans and the city of Manchester itself.

Twenty years later, the elements of the look remain stalwarts of British street style. Parkas, football shirts and retro tracksuit tops, Adidas Superstars and baggy jeans; all are staples of the male weekend wardrobe, and so ubiquitous on the high street, you don’t even have to rely on Madchester-spawned label Joe Bloggs to provide them any more. Although drummer Reni’s fondness for a fishing hat should really remain a signature foible.
