Lost Edinburgh: Victoria Terrace

The new Missoni hotel complex stands at the top of the street and stretches along George IV Bridge all the way up to the Royal Mile.

The Missoni hotel is the centre piece of the £50 million development which took more than four years to complete. The imposing and modern building, which was completed in 2010, keeps some of the same features as the old building. The arches have been reinstated in an attempt to maintain the original look.

Marion Williams, director of the Cockburn Association, said of the new building: “It’s a bit of a disappointment. It neither blends in with the other buildings in the area nor is bold enough to make a real impact.”

Victoria Street is certainly one of the more interesting and vibrant streets in the capital, with the action-packed Grassmarket at its foot and the bustling George IV Bridge at the top, it has always been a great spot for night-life in this part of town.
