Island of the week: Benbecula

IN the first of our series on Scotland’s islands, we find that Benbecula’s rugged scenery betrays an interesting military past

Location: Outer Hebrides

Population: 1,249 (2001 census)

Gaelic name: Beinn na Faoghla (Mountain of the Ford)

Benbecula, situated between North and South Uist, is traditionally lauded for its beautiful beaches and rugged rural landscapes. Though not as popular with sightseers as other islands, Benbecula - and the Uists in general - has a mysterious allure about it; there are stretches of coast where, in the very early morning, you may not see a single soul on the horizon, and this feeling of remoteness can be especially thrilling. It is, however, populous enough that the amenities in the island’s major town, Balivanich, are more than adequate.

History

Benbecula is noted for its long military traditions, dating back to World War II where an airfield - now Benbecula airport - was built. The army base built in 1958 has housed a sizeable number of the island’s total population, and is a major employer on the island. The island is also a missile testing site.

Dating further back, Benbecula’s ruins can be traced back to the 6th century, where monks established a monestary that now lies in ruins south of Balivanich - Teampull Chalium Chille.

Benbecular also figures prominently as the scene of the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie, who, with the help of Flora MacDonald, fled to Borve Castle in 1746 and evaded capture by cross-dressing under an alias, Betty Burke.

Attractions

Though Balinvach has a decent amount of facilities to pass the time - the Nunton Steadings leisure complex, the modestly-sized Lionacleit fitness centre and a nine-hole golf course - it is the opportunity to walk and cycle around the isle which should provide ample temptation for visitors.

How to get there

Visitors can reach Benbecula by ferry, although there are no direct routes to Benbecula from the mainland - there are, however, ferry services to neighbouring North and South Uist. Direct flights from Glasgow are available.
