Top tunes this week.

VARIOUS - CLASSICS V.1 (SHACK MUSIC)

Kemistry’s ‘Buzz Parade’ is littered with untidy rhythms and offset by a rising stab, which subsides into piano-led bliss. The Franck Roger remix delivers smooth, modern garage vibes while DJ Technic’s ‘Charm City Groove’ has a classic house feel with NY-style beats.

MAX D. BLAS - YOU BELONG TO THIS (DORIAN PAIC/AUTRE/MARKUS FIX RMXS) (GRAND CANAL RECORDS)

A vocal house cut with loose, discoid percussion. Hooky, organic and undeniably funky, it comes off like a live band dropping a house cut. Dorian Paic treads a stripped back, skeletal path with delayed vox hits and unnerving synth rises. Markus Fix uses a wider percussive palette using melodic snippets, rattling drums and undulating subs.

CRAZY P - HEARTBREAKER (HUXLEY / MARK E REMIXES) (2020 VISION)

The original version is deep, emotive disco with an injection of funk and soul. Mark E’s mix takes the form of deep, hypnotic house - a brilliant contrast to the original with a darker more underground vibe. Huxley dishes up a skilful fusion of house meets garage.

BEHLING & SIMPSON - CLOSER EP (2020 MIDNIGHT VISIONS)

Crunchy drums and booming tom-driven bass hook drives this track. A soulful female vocal adds a sense of musicality which compliments smooth building strings. ‘Fuse Strategy ft. James Fox’ is a raw house cut rinsed with bass that sounds fat. Shuffled drums run with intricate, warbling melodic synth lines. Closing on ‘U Were All Mine’, we are treated to a deeper more organic sound.

REMAIN VS POPULETTE - DISCOMFORT (INC. TROY PIERCE, CHLOE & MARC PINOL REMIXES) (MEANT RECORDS)

US techno heavyweight Troy Pierce delivers a deep, dark workout. Chloe turns in a version that blurs genre with a techno/disco vibe while Marc Pinol nails a slow-mo electro-disco rework.

CHERIE LEE - LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME THE REMIXES (DANSE CLUB)

Re-mastered and remixed version of the 1995 organ-led, shuffling house classic. The first of the remixes by Berlin-based Oliver $, who delivers a solid, rolling rework that picks up the pace and wraps edits of Lee’s vocal around a heads-down groove. Label bosses Brodanse offer up a stripped back, tech-fuelled beast that utilizes tight percussion, bumping bass and analogue squelches. Matthew K rubs up the original with subtle melodies and selected edits of the original vocal.

KYODAI - SHAKIN (INCL. DANIEL SOLAR / THE REVENGE REMIXES) (AUDIO TONIC RECORDS)

A stripped back soulful house track with old school rave chords, classic drum programming and smooth vocals layered on top - delayed and chopped up. Kyodai offers up a ‘Dub Mix’ with a raw edge while Daniel Solar puts out a tasteful rework of melodic deep house with a gritty electronic bass-hook, disco drums, with a blend of synth chords and pads. Graeme Clark, aka The Revenge, strips back the original for a loop-based track, with delicate synth lines and warbling delays.

NO ARTIFICIAL COLOURS - CAT & MOUSE EP (INCL. CERA ALBA REMIX) (FEAST RECORDS)

Raw shuffling percussion with ghostly, modulated voices implanted in the background with tweaked resonant synths to add texture.

Italoboyz - Episode#2 (Incl. Luna City Express Remix) (Superfiction)

Bass-driven cut with tight programming and organic percussion. Italoboyz intricate touches create dynamic sounds for old school rap lyrics to be looped and reverberated.

PETE DAFEET - PIANO TRACK (& MOODYMANC / ALESSIO ARCANGELI RMXS) (LOST MY DOG)

Piano Track is a chord-driven, no-nonsense house track with garage flavour melted through the bass hook. However, the best track is ‘Rush’, a soulful deep-house cut straight out the 90s with emotive strings and a tasty piano hook.

CESAR CORONADO - VOODOO (INC TILL VON SEIN & DIXIE YURE REMIXES) (FIAKUN)

Voodoo is an intense rolling tech houser with filtered synth lines, solid drum programming and subtle melodies with soulful vocal… very nice.
