Gary Flockhart: Skyfall riding high in hands of Adele

AFTER months of rumours, it was the worst kept secret in pop that Adele would sing the theme song to the new Bond film.

Skyfall shot straight to the top of the iTunes chart after being released in the early hours of Friday after fans gave it a massive thumbs-up.

On hearing the song, Ajay Chowdhury, from the James Bond International Fan Club, gushed, “There are three types of Bond song - one is bold, brassy and sexy like Goldfinger, another is reflective and mournful like You Only Live Twice, and the third is anthemic and adventurous like Live And Let Die.

“It’s a beautiful ballad that promises to become a Bondian classic.”

I agree. Great job, Adele. Skyfall is the best Bond tune for ages.

Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, and featuring a 77-piece orchestra, it’s an instant classic that delivers everything you’d want from a Bond theme - a big piano ballad with a dramatic chorus and strings to make John Barry swoon.

The film of the same name - Daniel Craig’s third outing as 007 - is released in UK cinemas on October 26, and Adele’s song is believed to reflect its ‘dark’ and ‘moody’ narrative.

Surprisingly, no Bond theme has ever topped the UK singles chart. The highest-charting Bond theme was Duran Duran’s A View To A Kill, which reached number two in 1985.

I can see that changing this time. Adele is so massively popular it’s likely she’ll add to her many chart records by registering the very first James Bond Official Number One Single.

Adele’s offering, co-written with Paul Epworth, entered the charts at number four last weekend but, as the Bond hype machine gets into full swing, I fully expect Skyfall to climb to the top spot.
