Game reviews: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Dave Cook

So it’s no surprise that Uncharted 3 raises the stakes by throwing fearless treasure hunter Nathan Drake head first into the wringer as he faces his most perilous challenge yet.

This instalment deals with the backstory of Drake and his confidant Sully, as they attempt to crack the secret of Sir Francis Drake’s mysterious ring, and outsmart Marlowe, the villainous leader of a shadowy order looking to claim the ring for herself. There is more exposition into the characters, but this is by no means a soppy story, as the game still delivers gunplay and stunts in droves.

Climbing around stunning vistas from locations around the globe – such as a crumbling chateau in France, the blazing heat of the Rub’ al Khali desert, and a Syrian castle – you can really appreciate just how far developer Naughty Dog is pushing the PlayStation 3 hardware.

The action sequences deserve special mention, as they give most action movies out there today a serious run for their money; they are the kind of set-pieces you could only create in a game. With a long campaign and massive multiplayer, Uncharted 3 is a generous offering that delivers more bang for your buck than any game so far this year.
